Handfeeding on video

By Dima - Posted on 15 July 2011

I wanted to share these clips with you. Meeko's an anti-social large Husky pup that owners, been a bit over-protective and over-cautious, do not let off the lead - un-castrated and sexually over-enthusiastic he used to refuse any stimulus and ignore the handlers in every class I have ever seen him in. He eventually failed his first Puppy Foundation assessment due to being reluctant to remain still on people's approach and behaving around other dogs - lead walking and reacting to dogs moving passed him.

Being fed on mixture of dry and wet food, I can see why his handfeeding never took off as it did for the rest of the class. But then he was booked to spend 9 days with me and I decided to see whether he's actually a difficult dog, or just the result of owner's excuses and inexperience. He picked a couple of squabbles in the first couple of days here, and even had to be muzzled for a few days after that when left around other dogs, and as you can see I have a few there. But then the penny dropped! Watch Meeko illustrating different (still basic) aspects of Handfeeding, and, boy, did he do it well!

It is not a professionally filmed video, but just another set of Handfeeding sessions after staying with us for few days.

Please let me know what and how you would see his behaviour.

Raw feeding is widely considered to be a healthy option when it comes to feeding your dogs. But most dogs on raw / wet food diets struggle with their training and rewards due to the understandable difficulty in delivering the latter.

Please see this quick guidance video if you are in process of making up your mind on whether to do it, or not.

Both dogs in these videos came with massive problems – mostly, being around other dogs and people. And even though you will not see the solution in here, as a starting point in their training I chose to spend time teaching them to be “perfect” in less strenuous circumstances in order to proceed further at a later stage.
